Early Season Reports – MAC

Akron

Recap:  Akron shut out Morgan State 41-0 in between losing to Big Ten opponents Penn State and Indiana.

Stats so far:  Akron sits at 88th with 3.52 yards per rush attempt and 67th with 6.8 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 23 points and 297.7 yards on offense in their first three games.  Defensively, they are 56th with 3.61 yards allowed per rush attempt and 64th with 6.7 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 23 points and 332.3 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Zips visit Central Michigan, then host Ohio and visit Buffalo in two MAC East matchups.

Bowling Green

Recap:  After beating Troy by 17, Bowling suffered two 7-point losses on the road to Missouri and Marshall.

Stats so far: Bowling Green ranks 114th with 2.26 yards per rush attempt and 88th with 6.1 yards per pass attempt. Overall, they have scored 20.3 points and gained 367.3 yards on average in their first three games.  Defensively, the Falcons are 97th with 4.59 yards allowed per rush attempt and 27th with 5.5 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have given up 19.3 points and 334.3 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Falcons host Mountain West superstars Boise State before taking on MAC East foes Ohio and Kent State.

Buffalo

Recap:  Buffalo beat UTEP 23-17 on the road and lost on the road to UCF by the same score.  In between those games they were blown up at home by Pittsburgh, 54-27.

Stats so far:  Buffalo is 106th with 2.91 yards per rushing attempt and 23rd with 8.6 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 22.3 points and 371 yards in their first three games.  Defensively, they rank 108th with 5.28 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 30th with 5.7 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 31.3 points and 354.7 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Bulls travel to Temple before hosting Central Michigan and Gardner-Webb.

Kent State

Recap:  Kent State beat Coastal Carolina 18-0 before getting blown out by Boston College and Iowa State.

Stats so far:  Kent State sits at 111th with 2.48 yards per rush attempt and 105th with 5.5 yards per pass attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 13 points and 275 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 60th with 3.68 yards allowed per rush attempt and 41st with 6 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have given up 22.7 points and 312.7 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Golden Flashes have a road trip to Baylor in between home games against Miami (OH) and Bowling Green.

Miami University

Recap:  The 48-26 loss to Western Michigan was the best game for the RedHawks so far.  Yikes.  That 22-point blowout followed up shutout losses to Kentucky (42-0) and Boise State (48-0).

Stats so far:  Miami is 116th with 2.15 yards per rush attempt and 111th with 5.3 yards per pass attempt.  Overall, they have scored 8.7 points and gained 267.7 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 84th with 4.26 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 102nd with 8.1 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 46 points and 433 yards per game.

Coming up:  The RedHawks visit Kent State then host rival Cincinnati before travelling to Northwestern.  A win in any of those three is unlikely, but would be more than welcome for a struggling team.

Ohio

Recap:  After a 23-16 loss to Connecticut, the Bobcats squeaked out a 1-point road win over North Texas and routed Cal Poly at home.

Stats so far:  Ohio is ranked 107th with 2.9 yards per rushing attempt and 67th with 6.8 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 25 points and 303 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 87th with 4.29 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 7th with 4.6 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have given up 21 points and 312.7 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Bobcats take on a brutal road schedule with trips to Tennessee, Bowling Green, and Akron.  They’d like a decent showing against the Volunteers, but staying healthy for the MAC games is more important.

Temple

Recap:  Things haven’t started well with a 3-point loss to Villanova and a beatdown at the hands of Penn State.

Stats so far:  Temple is 99th with 3.14 yards per rushing attempt and 25th with 8.4 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 15 points and gained 353.5 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 51st with 3.47 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 83rd with 7.2 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 29 points and 358 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Owls will look to get right against MAC foes Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Ball State.

Ball State

Recap:  Ball State has had a rough early start with losses to North Texas, New Hampshire, and Army.  Their next couple of games could be even tougher.

Stats so far:  Ball State is 69th with 3.88 yards per rushing attempt and 116th with 4.9 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 14.3 points and 270.3 yards in their first three games.  Defensively, they are 77th with 4.14 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 57th with 6.4 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have given up 22.3 points and 366.3 yards a game.

Coming up:  The Cardinals won’t have an easy time finding that first win.  A trip to Auburn leads into a visit from Toledo and then another road test at Temple.

Central Michigan

Recap:  Central Michigan opened with a 19-6 loss at Arizona, then rebounded with a big upset of Michigan State.  They stomped Alcorn State in a shutout.

Stats so far:  Central Michigan is 92nd with 3.42 yards per rushing attempt and 92nd with 6 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 27.7 points and gained 306.3 yards on average.  Defensively, they are 47th with 3.33 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 82nd with 7.1 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 15.3 points and 300 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Chippewas enter conference play against Akron, Buffalo, and Eastern Michigan.

Eastern Michigan

Recap:  Eastern Michigan is 0-3, including losses to the Big Ten’s Northwestern and Michigan.  They also dropped a 27-14 contest to Army in the opener.

Stats so far:  Eastern Michigan is 84th with 3.59 yards per rushing attempt and 112th with 5.1 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 18.3 points and 276 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 117th with 6.36 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 15th with 5.1 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have given up 33 points and 366.3 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Eagles take on MAC opponents Temple, Central Michigan and Kent State.

Northern Illinois

Recap:  After a close loss at Wisconsin, the Huskies blew out Western Illinois and took down Purdue on the road.

Stats so far:  Northern Illinois is 43rd with 4.69 yards per rushing attempt and 55th with 7.3 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 29.7 points and gained 374.3 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 80th with 4.23 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 73rd with 6.9 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have given up 18.7 points and 330.3 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Huskies will host Idaho and Western Michigan before travelling to Toledo.

Toledo

Recap:  Toledo took on three BCS conference teams to start the season and lost in an offensive battle at Purdue, upset the Big 12’s Colorado and then fell back to earth with a thud, getting shut out by Ohio State.

Stats so far:  Toledo is 33rd with 4.97 yards per rushing attempt and 65th with 6.9 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 28.3 points and gained 442.3 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 116th with 6.08 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 73rd with 6.9 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have given up 42.7 points and 502.7 yards per game.

Coming up:  Four of the Rockets’ next five games are at night including a trip to Florida International and a home game against Western Michigan.  Between those two is a noon contest at Ball State.

Western Michigan

Recap:  After two losses on the road to Big Ten teams Michigan and Indiana (a close 23-19), the Broncos blasted MAC foe Miami.

Stats so far:  Western Michigan is 115th with 2.16 yards per rushing attempt and 81st with 6.4 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 24.7 points and gained 319.7 yards per game.  Defensively, they are 94th with 4.48 yards allowed per rushing attempt and 77th with 7 yards allowed per passing attempt.  Overall, they have given up 26.7 points and 410.7 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Broncos welcome Hofstra before two MAC road trips to Northern Illinois and Toledo.  Winning those two would put them in a good position to take the conference.
