Early Season Reports – Big East

Cincinnati

Recap:  After blowing out Rutgers and Southeast Missouri State and, Cincinnati posted a huge road win over Oregon State.

Stats so far:  Cincy ranks 40th with 4.76 yards per rush attempt and 14th with 9 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 48.3 points and 516.7 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 10th with 2.06 yards allowed per rush attempt and 27th with 5.5 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 12 points and 271 yards per game.

Coming up:  Cincinnati will try stay unbeaten against dangerous Fresno State, followed by road trips to Miami (OH) and South Florida, both of which the Bearcats should handle easily.

Connecticut

Recap:  A 2-point loss to North Carolina is the only blemish with wins over Ohio and Baylor.

Stats so far: UConn is 64th with 3.99 yards per rush attempt and 105th with 5.5 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 21 points and gained 321.3 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 21st with 2.67 yards allowed per rush attempt and 52nd with 6.2 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 16.7 points and 260.3 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Huskies get a breather against Rhode Island before a pair of tough conference games against Pittsburgh and Louisville.

Louisville

Recap:  After a win over Indiana State, Louisville couldn’t quite hang on in a close loss at Kentucky.

Stats so far:  Louisville ranks 45th with 4.41 yards per rush attempt and 47th with 7.6 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 28.5 points and 398.5 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 29th with 2.92 yards allowed per rush attempt and 20th with 5.3 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 20.5 points and 223.5 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Cardinals face some big challenges in Utah and Pittsburgh, followed by a visit from Southern Mississippi.

Pittsburgh

Recap:  The 3-0 start includes big wins over Youngstown State, Buffalo and Navy.

Stats so far:  Pitt is 21st with 5.33 yards per rush attempt and 43rd with 7.7 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 39.7 points and gained 380 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 12th with 2.18 yards allowed per rush attempt and 95th with 7.7 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 14.7 points and 292.3 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Panthers will try to stay undefeated with tough road trips to NC State and Louisville and a home date with Connecticut.

Rutgers

Recap:  After getting blown out by Cincinnati, Rutgers beat Howard and Florida International.

Stats so far:  Rutgers ranks 70th with 3.86 yards per rush attempt and 24th with 8.5 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 27.7 points and 385 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 53rd with 3.51 yards allowed per rush attempt and 85th with 7.4 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 23 points and 362.7 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Scarlet Knights will hope for a couple wins out of games against Maryland, Texas Southern and Pittsburgh.

South Florida

Recap:  USF has big wins over Wofford, Western Kentucky and Charleston Southern, but must finish the season without starting QB Matt Grothe.

Stats so far:  USF is 16th with 5.63 yards per rush attempt and 11th with 9.3 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 44.7 points and gained 455.7 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 76th with 4.13 yards allowed per rush attempt and 2nd with 3.8 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 6.7 points and 227.7 yards per game.

Coming up:  New starting QB B.J. Daniels will lead the Bulls in tough games against Florida State, Syracuse and Cincinnati.

Syracuse

Recap:  After a near-miss against Minnesota, Syracuse lost to Penn State before beating Northwestern.

Stats so far:  Syracuse ranks 105th with 2.95 yards per rush attempt and 63rd with 7 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have averaged 21.3 points and 309.3 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 18th with 2.55 yards allowed per rush attempt and 97th with 7.8 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 28.3 points and 381.3 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Orange hope for a couple of wins out of games against Maine, South Florida and West Virginia.

West Virginia

Recap:  After beating Liberty and East Carolina, WVU lost to Auburn on the road.

Stats so far:  WVU is 23rd with 5.25 yards per rush attempt and 14th with 9 yards per passing attempt.  Overall, they have scored 32.7 points and gained 485.3 yards on offense per game.  Defensively, they are 21st with 2.67 yards allowed per rush attempt and 60th with 6.5 yards allowed per pass attempt.  Overall, they have allowed 27 points and 312 yards per game.

Coming up:  The Mountaineers take on Colorado, Syracuse and Marshall and could easily win all three.
